Guidelines for Donating to the H.M. Briggs Library

The H.M. Briggs Library welcomes and encourages donations, including funds, books, technology, and other items that will contribute to meeting the research and educational needs of South Dakota State University's students and faculty. The library may be selective in its acceptance of gifts, but appreciates all gifts received.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Factors considered in determining whether non-monetary donations are added to the library's collections include:
    • age and condition of the items
    • collection development criteria
    • educational, research, and/or historical value
    • need for duplicate copies
    • relevance to South Dakota
    • space availability
  • The library reserves the right to determine the location, treatment, and other factors related to the disposition of donated items.

Donor Procedrues

  • Monetary donations will be directed to the Dean of the Library office.
  • Donors of physical donations will be asked to complete a gift acceptance form, which includes a brief description of the donation and contact information.
    • Instrument of Gift Form (General)
    • Deed of Gift Form (Archives & Special Collections)
  • The library does not create an itemized listing of donated materials.
  • Upon request, the library will include bookplates in donated books.


  • Items donated to the library become property of teh library and South Dakota State University and will be treated in compliance with the State of South Dakota Property Management policies.
  • Donations of materials to the H.M. Briggs Library are tax deductible.
  • For information about donating noncash gifts, please visit the Internal Revenue Service's website or contact a tax professional.
  • The library cannot provide appraisals of materials. To obtain an appraisal, donors may contact professional appraisers before making the donation.


  • Refer monetary gifts to the Office of the Dean of the Libraryat 605-688-5106.

  • Refer historical and archival materials to teh University Archives and Special Collections at 605-688-4906.
