Library Services Desk: Ebooks / Streaming Video

This guide is intended to provide a communications means to all personnel involved in the Library Services Desk

User / Access Models: Purchased and owned in perpetuity—patrons can always access the title.

  • One User (1B1U): Provide patrons access to titles, one user at a time.

  • Three Users (1B3U) :Provides access to three patrons simultaneously.

  • Unlimited Users (1BUU) :Unlimited simultaneous users per title. By purchasing eBooks with unlimited simultaneous user access, patrons will never experience turn-aways or holds for titles in high demand.

  • Unlimited Users (1BUU DRM-free) : Unlimited access to users with no DRM (Digital Rights Management) restrictions on printing, saving, copying, etc. Full-book downloads require no sign-in to My EBSCOhost, no Adobe ID, and no special software such as Adobe Digital Editions. The only requirement is that the user authenticates to your institution's collection.

Demand-Driven Acquisition
In EBSCOhost Collection Manager (ECM), the concept of DDA is implemented with the use of DDA lists. Like Ownership lists, DDA lists are sets of titles. However, when a DDA list is ordered, nothing is actually purchased by the customer. Rather, ordering a DDA list makes all of the titles in that list available to the patrons of the library via EBSCOhost.
These titles can then be triggered for automatic purchase upon meaningful patron usage of the eBook full text.

Concurrent Access Model
The Concurrent Access Model (CAM) provides a perpetual license to e-books available on an unlimited concurrent access basis up to an annual maximum of uses (typically 365 uses).
For example, if a CAM eBook has 365 uses available, and six users attempt to access the eBook at the same time, all six users will be able to view the eBook but only 359 uses will remain on the eBook.

Once that number is met, the eBook becomes unavailable. On the anniversary of the purchase date, the number of uses is reset to the original maximum.

What triggers "usage" of a CAM eBook is the same as the triggers for Demand-Driven Acquisition eBooks:

  • Browsing the eBook for more than 10 minutes
  • Turning more than 10 pages in the eBook
  • Downloading any portion of the eBook
  • Emailing any portion of the eBook
  • Printing any portion of the eBook
  • Checking out an eBook (Note: Each day an eBook is checked out counts as one CAM use.)

Short Term Loan

Short term loans allow users temporary access at a small cost. Short Term Loans are available via DDA collections. Loans are available in 1,7, 14, 28 day increments.

ProQuest Ebook Central

User / Access Models:

  • 1-User (1U) - One-user perpetual license. A title purchased as 1USER means that one (1) user can access the document.

  • 3-User (3U) - Three-user perpetual license. A title purchased as 3USER means three (3) users can access the document concurrently. Users will be automatically rolled over to the next available copy if the first one or two are in use.

  • Non-Linear (NL) - Non-Linear access. Under this model, titles are not restricted to linear distribution - one patron at a time - but rather they can be lent to any number of patrons concurrently. The number of days used for each loan instance is subtracted from the total number of annual loan days set for the title - usually 325.

  • Unlimited Access (UA) - Unlimited access titles can be accessed by an unlimited number of users at the same time. All titles in subscription collections (for example, Academic Complete) are unlimited access titles.

STL - Short-Term Loan

A loan is an Ebook Central book that is made available on an Ebook Central site for the required number of days at a fraction of the book's purchase price. A loan is an Ebook Central book that is made available on an Ebook Central site for 1, 7, 14 and 28 days

Perpetual Access

Purchased titles. If an Ebook Central site purchases titles, they have access to them as long as they have access to their Ebook Central site. Even if a publisher decides to remove a title from Ebook Central, if an Ebook Central site has purchased the title it will not be removed. Perpetual access titles can be purchased as either single-user-only (1USER), three-user (3USER), non-linear (NL), or unlimited access (UA). Please note that not all titles are available in every access model.
