In-text Citations

  • References are cited within the text using superscript numbers.
  • Reference numbers go outside of periods and commas and inside colons and semicolons.
  • Only use authors' last names in your paper.
  • Examples:
    • As stated in the awesome case study,4
    • Data from the cool research reports is summarized below 2-5
    • The weird study by Jones7 supported our findings.

Formatting References

Put references in the order they appear in your paper.

Authors

  • Authors are written with the author's last name first, and then initials with no periods.
  • If there are 6 or fewer authors, separate names with commas.
  • If there are more than 6 authors, give the first 3 followed by "et al."
  • Examples:
    • Hunter AW, Westman FL.
    • Hunter AW, Westman FL, Keating, ME, et al.

Titles and Subtitles

  • Capitalize the first word, proper nouns, names of clinical trials, and abbreviations that are normally capitalized (DNA, EKG, etc.)
  • A colon and space separates the title and subtitle. Subtitles begin with a lowercase letter (unless it's a proper noun).
  • Examples:
    • Exciting new medical discovery from the Mayo Clinic: results from a case report.
    • A brilliant case study using all the tests: EKGs, MRIs, and CT scans.

Journal Names

  • Journal names should be abbreviated and italicized.
  • Abbreviations can be found by typing in the name of the journal at ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals/
  • Examples:
    • Am J Physiol
    • Med Lab Sci

Next, all the Numbers

  • Year;Volume(Issue):FirstPage-LastPage.
  • Example:
    • 2024;57(6):96-102.

  • This is the last element! Do not put a period after it.
  • Examples:
    • doi:10.1186/s13256-023-04002-z
    • doi:10.30699/ijp.2023.551854.2878

Find AMA citations in PubMed

If you find an article in PubMed, you can click the Cite button on the right-hand side. Then, click the format button in the bottom-right corner of the window to choose AMA format. Click the copy button on the bottom-left to copy the citation. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR COPIED CITATIONS! They are pretty good, but often get the capitalization wrong.
