Sociology Guide: Editing the EndNote ASA style

This guide is designed to help students do research within the fields of sociology, anthropology, and criminal justice.

Edit the ASA Style in EndNote

The ASA style available in EndNote is listed as ASA 4th edition. There are only a few problems with the style as it is so some quick and easy edits will bring it to working correctly.

Open the Style Manger

  • In EndNote, click on the Edit menu, mouse over "Output Styles" then click on "Open Style Manager"

  • Scroll to "Amer Sociological Assn" and double click on it.
  • On the menu on the left side of the page, choose "Anonymous Works"
    • Use "Use short title in place of author"
  • On the menu on the left side of the page, under "Citations" choose "Author Lists" & edit the highlighted fields as shown in the illustration below.
    • In the Author Separators box, put a comma before the and in the "before last" box in both lines.
    • In the Abbreviated Author List area, click the radio button for "If [box] or more authors and fill the boxes in with 10 and then 7.
    • Repeat the last step in the Subsequent Abbreviated Author List area.

  • On the menu on the left side of the page, under "Citations" choose "Author Names" & edit the highlighted fields as shown in the illustration below.
    • In the Name Format area, change the First author using the drop down menu so it reads Smith, Jane.
    • Image of citations authors names box: Name Format; First author: Smith, Jane (this is changed using the drop down menu); Other authors: John Doe; Capitalization: As Is; unchecked box; Capitalize only the author's last name; Initials: Last Name Only; unchecked box; Use initials only for primary authors with the same name; Consecutive Citations by the Same Author; unchecked box; Omit repeated authors (e.g. Smith 1999, 2000); unchecked box; Separate these citations with:; unchecked box; Don't omit authors from citations that have suffixes.
  • On the menu on the left side of the page, under "Bibliography" choose "Author Lists" & edit the highlighted fields as shown in the illustration below.
    • In the Author Separators box, put a comma before the and in the "before last" box in both lines.
    • In the Abbreviated Author List area, click the radio button for "If [box] or more authors and fill the boxes in with 10 and then 7.
    • Image of Author Lists box: Author Separators; Number of Authors; between; before last; 1 to 100; ,; , and (the comma must be added); 100 to 100; ,; , and (the comma must be added); Abbreviated Author List; unchecked radio button; List all author names; checked radio button; If 10 (10 must be entered in the box) or more authors, list the first 7 (7 must be entered in box) author(s) and abbreviate with: ,et al.; unchecked box; Italic; unchecked radio button; If eight or more authors, list the first 6 authors; insert: empty box and add the last authors name; For Subsequent Works by the Same Author checked radio button; Print the author list as defined above; unchecked radio button; Omit the author list; unchecked radio button; Replace repeated authors with: unfilled box.
  • On the menu on the left side of the page, under "Bibliography" choose "Author Names" & edit the highlighted fields as shown in the illustration below.
    • In the Name Format area, change the First author using the drop down menu so it reads Smith, Jane.
    • Name Format; First author: Smith, Jane (this is changed using the drop down box); Other authors: John Doe; Capitalization: As Is; unchecked box; Capitalize only the Author's last name; Initials: Full Name
  • On the menu on the left side of the page, under "Bibliography" choose "Editor Lists" 
    • Under the Number of Editors, the first line should have 1 to 100 with a comma in the between box and a comma before the word and in the before last box.
      • This should be repeated in the second line that has 100 to 100.
    • In the Abbreviated Editor List section, activate the second radio button and change the numbers in the box so it says "If 10 or more editors, list the first 7 editor(s).

  • On the menu on the left side of the page, under "Bibliography" choose "Editor Names" & edit the highlighted fields as shown in the illustration below.

  • Close the style and save when asked.
    • If you choose to save the file as Amer Sociological Assn Copy, make sure that you use the style with Copy at the end of the name when you are writing your paper.
