Military Structure
The American Indian boarding school system was based on a military model developed by army officer and founder of Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Richard Henry Pratt. The children were prepared for military service and were favored candidates for recruitment. Students woke up to loud early morning horns. Drills and inspections were incessant, and the children were expected to dress and act like soldiers. Punishments reflected the military structure and included being locked in closets and forgotten about for days.
