9/5 - Common Read Kickoff - 7 pm, Volstorff Ballroom, University Student Union

A highly interactive, examination of the book and themes of Choice, Awareness, Relationships Emotional Wellness (CARE).

 

9/11 -  Sex Ed Boot Camp - 7-8:30 pm, Volstorff Ballroom

Joni frater and Esther Lastique are best-selling authors, radio hosts and trained sexologists.  Funny, sassy and informative, they empower students to make better decisions about their sexuality with knowledge and confidence.  Their program is inclusive of all sexual orientations.  Sponsored by HEROH and the Wellness Center.

 

9/21 - We Move as a Group: Uniting the Genders in the Fight Against Rape Cutlure - 12- 12:30 pm, Walder Room 269 Union

Alice Sebold discusses her memoir, Lucky, which recounts her rape as a student at Syracuse University and its emotional and legal aftermath. Sebold is committed to inspiring a more open and inclusive conversation about sexual assault. Sponsored by the SD Festival of Books.

 

9/21 - The Great American Read Special Event:  An Evening with Alice Sebold   -    7-8 pm, PAC Larson Memorial Concert Hall

SDPB's Lori Walsh interviews Sebold about her life and writing, focusing on her best-selling novel, Lovely Bones, which is included on The Great American Read's list of 100 best-loved books. Sponsored by the SD Festival of Books.

 

9/25 - #RapeCultureIsWhen Seventeenth-Centure Spanish Literature Speaks to Our Moment - 7 pm, Volstorff Ballroom

The sheer number of tweets generated by the #RapeCultureIsWhen and #MeToo movements demonstrates the need to thoughtfully analyze and discuss how our social institutions and cultural practices normalize sexual violence in all its forms.  An analysis of the seventeenth-century novels by Spanish auther, Miguel de Cervantes can facilitate these conversations, challenging readers to examine their own beliefs about rape culture, sexual violence, and inequality (Dr, Christi Garst-Santos). Sponsored by the CAHSS Herbert Cheever Jr. Liberal Arts Lecture.

 

10/4 - CARE Fair - 10a m - 2 pm, Union Main Street

Focused on raising awareness and fostering prevention of sexual assault and the ways we can CARE for others and ourselves, this Main Street fair is designed to introduce students to the myriad of campus and community resources dedicated to their wellbeing.

 

10/9 - Professionals Panel - 7-8:30 pm, Rotunda D

A panel of professionals will discuss their roles in the prevention of and response to sexual assault.

 

10/24 - Take Back the Night - 7 - 8:15 pm,  Brookings City-County Government Building

Take Back the Night is an international movement with the mission of ending sexual, relationship and domestic violence in all forms.  The campus and Brooking community will come together to rally and support survivors.  Sponsored by the Brooking Human Rights Commission.

 

 

10/31 - Writing as Reflection: Exploring Relationships -  7-8:30 pm, Wagner Hall 114

An evening of guided journaling focusing on relationships present in our lives. Participants will explore and reflect upon both self and others as a means of discovery and expression.  They will also learn about methods and efficacy of journaling.

 

11/5 - Griffith Lecture - 7 pm, Performing Arts Center

Social justice advocates and co-founders of End Rape on Campus, Annie E. Clark and Andrea Pino will share their vision for sexual assault awareness and prevention at the Griffith Honors Forum Lecture. Sponsored by the Van D. and Barbara B.
