EndNote: Styles

Output Styles

EndNote comes with 100 styles - often not the one you want. Follow these steps to find other styles from EndNote.com

Get New Styles

In EndNote, go to the Edit menu, mouse over Output Styles, and click on Open Style Manager.

Click on the Get More on the Web button.

Search for your style. The easiest way is often to search for the name of the journal or style.

Click on Download to the right of the style name.

When it has downloaded, move it to the file EndNote expects it to be in (see below to find out where this is).

Where do my Styles Go?

In EndNote, go to the Edit menu (for Windows) or EndNote menu (for Macs).

Click on Preferences.

Click on Folder Locations.

Note the location of the Styles Folder.

EndNote may have created the appropriate folders, if not you can create a styles folder wherever you want.

If you create a styles folder, copy the path to that folder into the Styles Folder line in the Folder Locations-Preferences window.

Styles are very useful but often need a little tweaking before they work exactly right. The most common problem is the capitalization of titles. The style is easy to fix when you notice things like this.

Title Capitalization is Not Correct

In EndNote, open the Edit menu, mouse over Output Styles and click on Open Style Manager.

Double click on the style you want to edit.

In the panel on the right, under Bibliography, click on Title Capitalization (if you are using a footnote style, click on Title Capitalization under Footnote).

Choose either Headline style capitalization (every important word is capitalized) or Sentence style capitalization (the first word of the title and after a colon is capitalized).

Close the style and save as you are prompted to do.

Bibliography is Not Sorted Correctly

In EndNote, open the Edit menu, mouse over Output Styles and click on Open Style Manager.

Double click on the style you want to edit.

In the panel on the right, under Bibliography, click on Sort Order.

Choose the way the citations should be sorted.

If they should be sorted in a way that is not available, you can have the records sorted by any field in the record using the Other option.

Note that there is an option to put edited works after works authored by the same person at the bottom of the box.

Close the style and save as you are prompted to do.

Author Names are Note Listed Correctly

In EndNote, open the Edit menu, mouse over Output Styles and click on Open Style Manager.

Double click on the style you want to edit.

In the panel on the right, under Bibliography, click on Author Name(if you are using a footnote style, click on Author Name under Footnote).

Choose how the first author's name should be listed - you have the option of FirstName LastName or LastName, FirstName or LastName FirstName. Note that you will have the option of changing to initials rather than FirstName later.

Choose how other author's names will be listed.

Choose your option for capitalization. Usually, you can leave that as the default - As Is.

If you style uses authors' initials instead of full names, choose that in the Initials option. You can use periods after initials and/or spaces between them here.

If the style uses the full name, make sure the Initials box indicated Full Name.

Close the style and save as you are prompted to do.

Multiple Authors are Not Listed in the Correct Order

In EndNote, open the Edit menu, mouse over Output Styles and click on Open Style Manager.

Double click on the style you want to edit.

In the panel on the right, under Bibliography, click on Author Lists (if you are using a footnote style, click on Author Lists under Footnote).

Determine how authors will be separated.

There is a separate option for the last author to include and or & if there are more than 2 authors.

List the number of authors to include and if there are more authors than should be included what to do to indicate there are more.

Determine how to treat multiple works by the same author.

Close the style and save as you are prompted to do.

To choose which styles appear in the dropdown list of styles to choose from in both EndNote and Word:
