EndNote: Getting Started

Getting and Installing EndNote

If you have an e-mail that ends in @sdstate.edu, you have access to the faculty/staff intranet called InsideState. You will need to log into InsideState using the username and password for your @sdstate.edu mail account (your username is the same as the part of the e-mail before the @).

  • Go to https://insidestate.sdstate.edu/academics/general/library/default.aspx (the library's site on InsideState).
  • Click on the version of EndNote for your computer EndNoteX8 (Windows or Mac).
  • Open or save the Word document (you may not share this document!).
  • The document has the link to download the EndNote software and the Product Key.
  • Go to the link on the Word document to download the software.
  • Follow the instructions from your browser to download the software. Note that you will need the Product Key when you install the software.

If you have an e-mail that ends in @jacks.sdstate.edu, you have access to the student intranet called MyState. You will need to log into MyState using the username and password for your @jacks.sdstate.edu mail account (your username is the same as the part of the e-mail before the @).

  • Log into MyState Online.
  • Click on Student Life.
  • The Library Info box should be on the right a bit down from the top.
  • Click on EndNote.
  • Click on the version of EndNote X8 that fits your computer type (Windows or Mac).
  • This will open a Word document with the link to download the software and the product key. Please do not give the product key to anyone who is not currently enrolled or employed by SDSU.
  • Go to the link on the Word document to download the software.
  • Follow the instructions from your browser to download the software. Note that you will need the Product Key from the word document when you install the software.

EndNote for the iPad is available from the app store for free.

Download and install it as you would any other app from the app store.

Note that EndNote for the iPad works with EndNote online so you should set up an online account for syncing.

You will need the Product Key from the document you accessed on InsideState or MyState in this procedure.

  • Close all Microsoft Office programs including Outlook.
  • Double click on the file you downloaded from EndNote.
  • Follow the instructions given to install the software.
    • You will be prompted for the Product Key which is listed on the Word document you accessed when downloading the software.
    • You do not need to change anything else during the installation process, just accept the default options.
