"Virtual Machine" Portal

Before offering this option it is best to make sure the students is not having log in problems because of a bad link or browser issue.

The university has made a "virtual machine" portal available to students. This has special software on it for students to use, and also has the side effect of being a great workaround for login problems, depending on the issue. The student can go to cloudapps.sdstate.edu and log in. Once they are logged in, they are seen as "on campus" by the browser, so they would be able to log in to any library resources without having to log in again. If they are unable to not log in to cloudapps, then the problem is likely with their credentials.

Notification Email

September 13, 2023 - An email notification that was meant to send borrowing activity reports to faculty and staff to remind them to renew their books went out today. Unfortunately, thanks to a change in the way Alma letter editing works, changes to the code did not stick and the letter went out to anyone who has any activity on their account. That includes fines, so even if they had nothing checked out they may have received a letter.

Wintrode's New Location

The Wintrode Center administrative office, the Academic Success and Recovery Program, and Opportunity Center coordinator will be located on the second floor of Wagner Hall. (check in at Wagner 251 or call 605-688-4153). The First Year Advising Center and tutoring services will be located on the first floor of Wagner (check in at Wagner 121 or call 605-688-4155).

For more details about Wintrode Center programs, visit https://www.sdstate.edu/wintrode or contact us at sdsu.advisingcenter@sdstate.edu.

EndNote21

EndNote21 is now available for current SDSU students, staff, and faculty. The installer files are linked from the EndNote guide (https://libguides.sdstate.edu/EndNote/Getting).

If people have problems on Windows with EndNote asking for a product code, they probably did not download both the installer file and the license.dat file to the same place on their computer. Make sure there is an EN21Inst file and a Lisence.dat file in the same location (both in the downloads folder or on the desktop, etc.).

Web Print Problems

Recently, there have been several times when the web print queue got backed up with many jobs waiting and nothing able to be printed. There is also a problem that occasionally happens with students getting an error message saying "web print is not available". These two issues both have the same root cause.

If you see either of these happening, please notify Scott (x5562) or Shari (x5560).  In the meantime, while it is happening, students can log in to one of our student computers and print from there; this bypasses the web print queue and their job should go through.

If neither of them is here, call Joe Portz at 688-6488 let him know that web print is not working and ask him if he or Chris Harris could check to see if the MarcoTech local user was logged in to our print server.

SD State Park Pass

Briggs Library has two South Dakota State Park Passes.

They check out for 3 days, and cannot be renewed or checked out on consecutive days.

The passes and their accompanying handbooks are located in the reserve collection (Call # GV54.S8 S72 park pass & GV54.S8 S72 2023). Patrons are not required to check out the handbook along with the pass.

We will give the patrons the contents inside the folders (after scanning the barcodes), but the folders themselves will be kept at the library until the pass/handbook are returned.

There is an $80.00 replacement fee if the pass is lost.

Brookings Public Library also has 3 park passes.

EndNote Does Not Appear to Be Running on a Mac

Check that the EndNote menu is showing at the top of the screen.

If the menu is showing, this means that EndNote is running but no library is open.

You can open an existing library or create a new one by clicking "File" then "New" or "Open Library". A new library will be saved to your Documents folder.

If the menu is not showing and you can't get it to appear, reboot your computer and try again.

WorldCat

When users come into the site, it is not personalized to SDSU, and results will be random and not specific to our region. The best option is to log into your WorldCat account (or create one if you haven’t) and mark SDSU as your favorite library. Then Worldcat will know to prioritize results to local area.  You will need to log in whenever you use WorldCat for that to work.

International Students/Social Security Office

International Affairs takes a van of students up to the Social Security office in Watertown a couple of times a month. (It may be every other Wednesday.) The students often come into the library lobby looking for the van driver. They should board the van behind the library (northeast corner) by 8:30 if they want to go with the group.

EndNote Temporary Citations {#3}

If citations are entered in curly brackets without formatting like {Meggyesy, 2000 #2}, several things might be the cause:

  • Check the record in EndNote. Make sure all the elements of the citation are in the correct place in the EndNote record.
  • Make sure that "Instnat Formatting is" says On
    • If it says Off, click on it and choose On
  • If the citation is added to the bibliography and not the text of your paper, click Edit & Managem Citations(s)
    • Choose the citation that is not showing up, make sure that "Default" is showing up in the Edit Citation tab of the lower portion of the screen.

Advantages to using temporary citations:

If you have a lot of citations in a document, Word may to check them frequently and start to run slow. If Word seems to freeze up or run slow, turn instant formatting off and just update the citations when you are done working for the day.

This information is also on the Endnote20 guide, Trouble Shooting tab.

Search & Notify Procedure

Follow this procedure when a patron reports that they cannot find an item on the shelf.

Check Alma and check the shelf to make sure the item is still available and that the patron has not overlooked it on the shelf.

If not found --

Ask patron if they want help finding another, similar title.  A librarian or library associate can help with this.

Fill out a Search/Notify slip, and check the box for “Search.”

If patron would like to be notified when found, check the box for “Notify”, too, and add patron information.

Inform the patron that they might get the item sooner through ILL. Help the patron with ILL request if needed.

Give the Search/Notify slip to Adam.

ArcGIS

We have been getting questions from students about computers with ArcGIS software on them. The library does have 3 computers that have the software installed; however, it is not known whether it will run well on our computers. All students in classes that use ArcGIS should have access to a VM version of it. They can go to Cloudapps.sdstate.edu , log in, and the software should be available to them. They should be able to do this from their own computers if they want to. If they try to log in and do not have access, please get their names and pass them on to Scott or Aine so we can get them access.

Printer Release Stations

Recently there have been a few times that students have logged into the print release stations and used them to send the prints to the printers. The login/lock screen should not usually come up, and Scott has fixed it so that it should appear only very rarely. However, when it does happen, we need to log in with the library login so that the print release login screen comes up. To do this, ctrl + alt + delete will not work on those stations. Use ctrl + windows key + delete, and you will be able to hit “enter” to log it in with the library login.

New York Times Emails (not receiving)

Faculty / staff that have signed up for NYT account email notifications / newsletters may stop receiving these after a period of time if too many are unopened. If the emails are ignored they stop sending them.

In order to reactivate this option they will need to contact NYT via chat or phone to have this service reinstated.

Lockdown Browser on Chromebooks

Pop-up blockers are activated by default in Chromebooks, so we may see students with Chromebooks unable to use Lockdown browser. Once the blocker is de-activated it should work. Scott says that instructions for how to do this will differ for various types of pop-up and ad blockers, and in different browsers. Generally  it is in the browser settings, or on the toolbar if it is an add-on.

KIC Scanner

The older /tall KIC scanner is not connected to the internet, so patrons will have to save to a USB drive.

  • If a patron inserts a USB before starting to scan, they will not see an option to send email at all.
  • If a patron does not insert the USB first, they may try to send by email, but they’ll get an error message. At that point they can still plug in a USB and save the scan.

Patrons can borrow a USB drive from the Library Services Desk.

Lockdown Browser and Mac Computers

The lockdown browser does not work on the Mac computers. If a student needs to use the lockdown browser, they can use any computer other than the Macs.

Electronics Recycling Program

Students can bring the following electronics to the Library Services Desk to be recycled: laptops, desktop computers, monitors, and cell phones. We cannot accept printers, keyboards, mice, or tablets.

  • For each donated item, please ask the student to fill out a “Student E-waste Recycling” form. Copies are on the back table next to the Instrument of Gift forms and Grad Study Room application forms.
  • Put the item and the form in the recycling bin next to the paper shredder is across from the ILL office.
  • The bag of shredded paper can be stored on top of the electronics.

Some phones may be worth money, so students may go online to ecoATM.com to look up the value. The ecoATM kiosk in Walmart is automated and pays out cash for newer devices in good condition.

Practical Mathematics for Precision Farming

PS 285/HO 285 - Agricultural Computations

Instructor: Jiyul Chang

Students in the course are using an ebook purchased by the library as their textbook: Practical Mathematics for Precision Farming. If they have problems accessing the text, they should try the following:

  1. Browser: We have found that Firefox works better for access to the book than Chrome.
  2. Wiley Online Library account: While on campus, register and log in with Wiley Online Library. Your Wiley profile should automatically affiliate with South Dakota State, and you will be able to access SDSU’s licensed content when you log in to Wiley Online Library from other locations. This access will work for 60 days and renew for another 60-day period each time you log in to your Wiley account while connected to SDSU’s campus network.
