Hear from a diverse panel of SDSU students about the journeys and choices that brought them to State.

9/19 - Common Read Open Mic Night - Jack's Place USU - 8 pm

The role of music, particularly rap and hip hop, is highlighted in The Other Wes Moore. Lend your voice in poetry or song or just come and listen to some of SDSU's most talented students.

9/24 - Getting Past Misunderstanding - Bailey Rotunda G - 7 pm

Local attorney, Michael Taylor, will present and lead a discussion of issues relating to social and criminal justice associated with the Common Read.

9/29 - Conversation Inspired by Wes Moore - VBR B, 7 pm

Business consultant, motivational speaker, and former Rapid City Councilman, Malcolm Chapman, will incorporate Common Read themes into his engaging, humorous, and inspiring address.

10/4 - Diversity Potluck - McCrory Gardens Education and Visitors Center, 5-7 pm

"Diversity is You, Me, and The Other" is the topic for Sam Jennings' presentation at this annual potluck featuring local foods with an international fair. Those attending should bring a dish to share.  Sponsored by the Brookings Human Rights Committee.

10/14 -  Common Read Film: Hoop Dreams - Bailey Rotunda D, 7pm

Jackrabbit Men's Jackrabbit Basketball, coach Scott Nagy and some of SDSU's own "hoop dreamers" will introduce this award-winning documentary about the role of basketball in the life of inner-city African American communities.

10/27 - Poverty Simulation - First Lutheran Church gymnasium - 7 pm

This interactive simulation will expose students to some of the challenges and realities of living in poverty. Space is limited. Pre-registration (via email to Sandra.newman@sdstate.edu) is required by October 15.

11/8 - Hunger Banquet - VBR, USU - 7 pm

Experience r a meal based on world food distribution, and learn about hunger in our community; gain additional insights into these realities, based n the context of the Common Read.  Tickets available after October 5 form the Honors College, $2.00 each.  Proceeds will go to the Brookings Harvest Table.

11/12 - The Importance of Youth Mentoring - City Council Chambers, Brookings City/County Building - 7 pm

Mentors, mentees, and local community leaders will discuss the important role of mentoring in the lives of young people and the broader community.  Sponsored by the Brookings Human Rights Committee.

11/19 - Griffith Honors Forum Lecture - Larson Memorial Concert Hall, Performing Arts Center,  7 pm

Rhodes scholar, White House Fellow, US Army combat veteran, author and hero of our Common Read, Wes Moore, will cap our series, sharing his inspiring story at the Griffith Honors Forum Lecture.  Free tickets required for admission, available at http://sdstate.edu/Griffith, October 5.
